TYLER - The Greater East Texas Black Nurses Association is awarding student nurses with scholarships.
This is part of their annual recognition and awards dinner. Today they gave out seven scholarships that ranged from $500 to $100.
Organizers tell us this is just one of the ways they are making an impact on the community.
"We focus on issues that are applicable in the Black community such as high blood pressure, diabetes and low birth rate in children," Past President Pauline Barnes says. "We want to help build healthier communities."
The organization recognized Dr. Ellen Melton and Dr. Carl Westbrook for their many years of service to the community.
Dr. Melton is the first African American female medical doctor from Lufkin. Dr. Westbrook has received numerous accolades for his work.
