TJC awards first bachelor's degrees

TYLER - Tyler Junior College awarded bachelor's degrees for the first time in its history on Friday in the Wagstaff Gym.

According to TJC, the commencement ceremonies recognized 682 candidates for graduation for the fall 2017 semester.

Graduates from the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, the School of Professional and Technical Programs, the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences and the School of Humanities, Communications and Fine Arts were recognized during the ceremonies.

TJC is the first and only community or junior college in the state of Texas authorized to offer a Bachelor of Science degree.

Early in 2015, campus leaders began planning to pursue legislative approval for the degree. Later on that year, legislative action was granted.

During the 85th Texas Legislative session in 2017, legislative approval was expanded to make TJC once of the state's four Legacy colleges, regarding community colleges and awarding baccalaureate degrees.

Along with TJC, the Legacy colleges are: Brazosport College, Midland College and South Texas College.
