TYLER, TX - The first production by the theatre at Tyler Junior College starts Wednesday.
It's an original one-act play written and directed by Theater professor Dr. David Crawford. It took him almost 5 years to research and write "The Olive Press: The Gethsemane Event."
This is a story many have heard growing up.
It's the story of Jesus and some of his Disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before the crucifixion.
Dr. Crawford was interested in looking into Christ's mindset. One thing that peaked his interest was the fact that Christ was sweating blood.
"It's Following our romantic period of looking pretty and praying wonderful prayers but no - we know that it was highly traumatic for him, but why? And the playwright takes over."
Others who helped with the production said it's a way to see him as a human man.
They believe we romanticize that he died for us, but he was living, forming relationships, and when the time came for him to sacrifice himself, those relationships and feelings were most likely warring inside of him.
This version of those events will be more modern in speech and dress and very few props will be used to prevent a much distraction from the message as possible.
The production runs this week only Wednesday-Saturday, September 20-23 at 7:30 p.m. there is a matinee performance on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. It will be in the Jean Browne Theatre inside the Wise Cultural Arts building.
Tickets are $5 for seniors and students and $10 for adults. For reservations, call the box office at 903-510-2212
