Tyler celebrates grand re-opening of Bergfeld Park's Amphitheater

Last week's rain could not keep the city of Tyler from making history tonight, celebrating the grand re-opening of the Bergfeld Park Amphitheater.

The City of Tyler made history Thursday night, celebrating the grand re-opening of the Bergfeld Park Amphitheater.

It's part of a multi-phase project to revitalize the park that's been several years in the making.

"A gentleman came to me a number of years ago and said there is so much movement going south in Tyler. We need to do something in this part of town to rejuvenate things and recreate interest in this part of town," City Councilman Don Warren said.

The Bergfeld Amphitheater remodel has been in the works since December 2016, when the city approved a construction contract for $978,000. It was funded in part by the city's half-cent sales tax and sizable donations from local charity organizations and private donors.

Complete with a new stage that slopes into rows of new seating and grass space, long time locals said the new amphitheater has been well worth the wait.

"It was always a great idea to have an amphitheater here. You know you drive by and no one was going to play on this stage, the way it used to be. So seeing it built up, this is what it should be," Tyler Civic Theater member Charles Praytor said.

But not everything has changed. City staff said they made sure to preserve a very important piece of the amphitheater's history.

"This park has been here since the 1930's. The walls you see here are the same that were originally built back in the 30's. So, what we've done here is redesign, rebuilt within these walls," Warren said.

It's just under a century of historic music and culture that generations of Tyler locals can appreciate for years to come.

"I grew up on N College Ave., so I always used to come down here...but now that there's a new one, I mean it's crazy," Tyler Civic Theater member J.J. Vandevent said.
