Tyler ISD student athletes face new drug testing policy

A new drug testing policy at Tyler ISD will randomly select student athletes every six for drug testing.

Tyler ISD student athletes will face random drug testing when they return to class this year.

Athletic Director Greg Priest said the new policy is not a reaction to any spike in campus drug use.

“This is not a policy because we think we have a problem. This is something just to stay on top of everything,” Priest sad.

Under the new policy, 10 percent of the school’s student athlete population will be required to take urine sample tests that will check for everything from illicit drugs to alcohol.

While selection is random, parents and coaches will be able to add a student to a testing pool if they suspect drug use.

According to Priest, the policy will make their students safer and more accountable.

“Playing athletics is a privilege,” Priest said.
