TYLER - Sunrise Paw Park is set to open this Saturday and pet owners said this is exactly what Tyler was missing.
Wednesday was Darsy’s first time visiting the park. Her owner Logan Ward lives right down the road, and brought her here for a game of catch.
Ward said a leash free park is very exciting.
“One, to have. Two, to be able to come to in a very short distance in Tyler,” he said.
Longview's dog park is also leash-free, but too far for those in Tyler. Jo Dobbs with the Rotary Club of Tyler said the idea all stemmed from the club looking for a community project.
“We realized there was a great need for a dog park… a public dog park that is free to the public, and there wasn't one,” said Dobbs.
The park is a breath of fresh air for residents like Ward. He said being a dog-lover in Tyler can be tough.
“In Tyler, the only places you can have dogs, even on a short leash, are parks. Anywhere else is either a road or a sidewalk… not that dog friendly at all,” he said.
Ward said Tyler isn't very "walk friendly" either.
“We only have cars in places within driving distance of each other… there's no walking anywhere so to have a place to come to to walk, especially with the dog, is a blessing,” he said.
Dobbs said generous donors supplied the 4 acres for the park -- and the rest was history… with the help the community, of course -- but they could still use some help.
