UPDATE: Pedestrian killed in early-morning accident identified

TYLER - UPDATE: A pedestrian killed while trying to cross Highway 271 near the University of Texas Health Science Center early Wednesday morning has been identified.

Eliceo Esquivel Vences, 30, of Marshall, was struck and killed around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning after authorities believe he intentionally ran in front of a vehicle from the far edge of the shoulder.

According to police, the scene is now clear and all lanes of traffic are now reopened.

An investigation continues this morning after a pedestrian was killed trying to cross Highway 271 near The University Health Science Center early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened aroun 2:00 a.m. According to a report from Tyler Police, a vehicle struck the pedestrian while traveling northbound on Highway 271. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Northbound lanes of Highway 271 are closed at this time so investigators can continue working on the accident. Police ask drivers to seek alternate routes until further notice. 

The victim's identity has not yet been released pending next-of-kin notification.
