Upshur Co. Sheriff's office investigating a Union Grove homicide

Upshur Co. deputies are looking into the death of a 23 year old Union Grove woman. Tristan Hardy reports.

UNION GROVE - News can spread fast in the small neighborhoods of Union Grove.

Residents described the town to be a 'typical Texas town' and peaceful. However, it was anything but when the Upshur County Sheriff's Office were responding to a shooting. When they arrived to the scene, 23 year old Miranda Streed was found dead. Rodney Humprey's place of business is next to where the shooting occurred.

"Whether you see it on the news or see it next door you kind of just wish it didn't happen," Humphrey said.

Knowing someone was killed only a few feet from where he works is troubling to Humphrey. He said the homicide is disappointing, considering he lives in a close-knit community. Even though Humphrey said Union Grove is a peaceful neighborhood, the sound of gunshots don't phase him.

"Seems to be a norm down here in Texas," Humphrey said.

The sheriff's office didn't say much about the investigation, but an autopsy has been ordered. Those who knew Miranda Streed didn't want to go on camera, but tell CBS 19 she was home alone at the time. They described Streed to be a kind and loving person.

Miranda Streed leaves behind her 4 year old son. More than 3 thousand dollars has been raised in a gofundme account for funeral expenses.
