In a recent blog post, James Hescock shed light on the safety concerns some UT Tyler students have about a heavily used crosswalk.
“They want to see something done,” Hescock said.
Located across the main entrance of the campus at Old Omen Road, the “HAWK” (High Intensity Activated Crosswalk) was installed in 2013 to make the crosswalk safer.
However, Student Government Association Vice President Preston Templeton says that it is confusing to drivers.
“You'll also have people when it becomes full red who just go ahead and run it,” Templeton said.
City officials say that the area was evaluated by their traffic engineer who determined that the HAWK was a more cost effective option, particularly because the crosswalk is located mid block location.
In response, the Student Government Association is gathering signatures for a petition to get a traffic signal installed.
