TYLER - It's hard to miss all the construction on Toll 49, and with it, figuring out the speed limit can be a bit tricky. Is the speed limit on Toll 49 for the entire 26 miles, 60 mph? CBS19 fact checkers decided to find out the answer.
It all started with an e-mail to the CBS 19 newsroom. In it, the viewer stated in part "All of 49 is considered under construction, even when no construction is going on."
The main construction project the North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority (NETRMA) is working is close to a 10-mile work zone from Highway 31 north to Interstate 20.
Signs in the area list the speed limit at 60 mph.
One of the reasons for the reduced speed is because speed is one of the top two causes of fatalities in work zone crashes, according to TxDOT.
Chris Miller with NETRMA said the permanent speed limit signs that say 70 mph are covered up with black cloth, rendering them void during the construction.
Instead, they need to follow the temporary 60 mph signs that have been put up; otherwise they risk getting a ticket.
So there's your answer. The speed limit for all of Toll 49 is 60 mph.
