White nationalist fliers pop up on ETX college campuses

Propaganda fliers pop up on Tyler college campuses

TYLER - Fliers promoting white nationalist propaganda popped up on two East Texas college campuses over the weekend. The fliers are from an organization called Vanguard America.

Students at both UT Tyler and Tyler Junior College say they have no idea who is behind the postings.

“Hate is un-American,” said SherDil Shegal, a senior at UT Tyler. “I don’t know a single person who believes in any of the stuff you showed me in those pictures.”

Shegal said these fliers are not representative of the school he knows and loves – one he said is a very united and diverse community.

According to a press release sent out by UT Tyler spokesperson Hannah Buchanan, a guard found the fliers on Saturday at 11:45 p.m. The incident is “being looked into”.

At Tyler Junior College, students said they are saddened to see these line the halls of the cultural arts building on Sunday.

TJC spokesperson Kim Lessner sent CBS19 a press release:

On Sunday evening, fliers from an unauthorized group were found by a TJC employee taped to the windows of the Wise Cultural Arts building.  These fliers were not approved for distribution on campus and immediately removed. The incident was reported to the TJC Campus Police and they are investigating the incident and reviewing security video.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact TJC Campus Police at 903-510-2258.

Tips can also be reported anonymously by texting 79516 and entering “tjctip” then the message. The caller’s name, phone number and location will not be sent to TJC Campus Police – only their message.

CBS19 spoke with the Texas Vanguard America chapter leader who asked to remain anonymous. The person said to continue to expect more fliers to pop up across college campuses in Texas.

“Racism does not have a side. It does not have a political polarity. Racism is racism. It’s ignorance,” Shegal said.
