1 dead and 2 injured after Highway 31 crash

TYLER - Nhi Tran, a 24-year-old Tyler native, has died and two others are injured after a two vehicle crash around 7 p.m. Saturday night on Highway 31 East, about 11 miles outside of Tyler.

A preliminary report shows that a 2012 Nissan Versa that was driven by 25-year-old Marco Antonio Ponce-Luna of Greenwood, Louisiana, was heading east on SH-31 and made an attempt to turn left into a private drive. 

All the while, a Jeep Wrangler that 23-year-old Megan Mathis was in headed westbound in on the same roadway.

The vehicles then struck each other in the westbound lane.

Tran was a passenger in the Nissan and was transported to ETMC in Tyler, where she was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Ponce-Luna was also transported to the Tyler ETMC.

Mathis and her passenger, 20-year-old Tyler native, Johnetta Preston, were both transported to Christus Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler, treated there, and released.
