YouCaring page set up to help injured UT Tyler basketball player

TYLER - A YouCaring donation page has been set up to help with the medical expenses of a University of Texas at Tyler student who was struck by a car over the weekend.

On Sunday, UT Tyler junior basketball player Justin Bartie was struck by a car while walking home on Old Omen Road, according to the YouCaring page set up to help his family with medical expenses. The college’s athletic department created the page.

Bartie, a Lake Charles, Louisiana, native, is in the ICU following the accident. The page hopes to lessen the financial burden on his family, who are in Tyler to be by his side.

“We have started this account to help Justin and his family during this time and appreciate your support and generosity in their time of need,” the page reads.

Bartie is a mass communication major at the college and hopes to work in sports journalism, according to his biography provided by Wes Bloomquist, sports information director for the college.

He played at Baton Rouge Community College and McLennan College prior to coming to UT Tyler as well as high school basketball at Hamilton Christian Academy, where he graduated in 2015.

In high school, Bartie averaged 21.5 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game. He earned All-State honors as a senior and was named the District 4A MVP.
