Longtime Longview Lobo Head Basketball coach passes away

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - This year's Lobo team practices in the same spot, where Leroy Romines molded  the 91-92 team. It won the state title. Andy Van Burkleo played point guard for Romines in the early 80's. He says they had a close relationship ever since.

"He not only wanted you to be a good player, but a good person." - Andy Van Burkleo, Former Player
Billy Goffney is now in charge of the Lobos basketball team, he says when he first got to Longview in 2011, Romines was the first to welcome him.
"The coach was well respected guy throughout the coaching world. When coaches find out I work at Longview, they immediately ask about him" - Billy Goffney, Head Basketball Coach
Romines won more than 400 games for Longview, and more than 700 in his career.  He was known for his fast paced, up tempo style. A style that helped fill this trophy case. Goffney says he has big shoes to fill.
"his memory will never die. His legacy will be lived on through all of the Lobos around here." - Goffney
"I have been to a few basketball tournaments with him and he's like a rock star down there. He can never go directly to his seat."  - Andy Van Burkleo
Burkleo says he is close to Romines' family, and says it's a tough time for them, but his loved ones know Romines is in a better place.
"Great teacher, great role model, there won't be another one like him." - Romines
