(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - After 85 years in business, Gulf State Lumber Co. in Tyler announced this morning that it will close on April 1.

Larry Hussey, president of Gulf State Lumber, said the longtime family owned business decided to close "because (of) the change in the economy."

The business, owned by Sam Wolf, was established in 1928 and supplies commercial building materials. Hussey said they specialize in high-grade products, such as redwood, cedar, fire-retardant and marine-grade products that wouldn't normally be found in big box stores.

Hussey has worked for the company for 26 years and said they have nine employees. Gulf State Lumber, at 302 E. Line St., sells to customers in the Tyler area.

"We're just trying to get the word out that we are going to close," Hussey said.
