Longview ISD enrollment growth leads Gregg Co., has trustees considering new elementary school

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Enrollment growth at Longview ISD has the district asking the state for class size waivers, and trustees looking to build a new elementary school.

Between 2009 and 2012, Longview ISD enrollment grew six percent to nearly 9,000 students - the highest enrollment growth, percentage-wise or numbers-wise, of any school district in Gregg County. This year, the district is asking the Texas education agency for waivers in six elementary-aged classrooms where the student-to-teacher ratio exceeds 22-to-one.

Meanwhile, trustees are seeking bids to build a new elementary school at this site on Melba street, where the former Jodie McClure Elementary School was for 54 years until it was demolished in 2010.

"To hear that something's coming back, another school, that's good news. That's great," said Tomesha Jamerson, who lives across Melba Street from the proposed site.

If built, the new school could open by August 2015.
