Longview mayor welcomes gay pride event to city

LONGVIEW (KYTX) -- Days after denying a proclamation for gay pride event, Longview Mayor Jay Dean is welcoming the event to the city.

Mayor Dean sent the organization behind the event -- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays or PFLAG  -- a letter acknowledging the importance of diversity in the community. He wrote, "I recognize Longview's LGBT community is a diverse group including individuals from all walks of life including doctors, lawyers, police officers, nurses, construction workers and professionals of all types."

The mayor had originally refused to issue a proclamation for the event, because it contradicts with his Catholic faith. But in the letter, Dean says, "it is our responsibility to work together to create an atmosphere that provides for the well-being of all."

PFLAG's even is scheduled for June 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Heritage Plaza in Longview.
