Man accused of carving name into Alamo wall, causing $250K in damage

SAN ANTONIO (KENS) - Police said 22-year-old Julio Perez used car keys to scratch his name into a wall inside the Alamo Thursday. This reportedly happened inside the Monk Burial Room, which is now closed while police investigate.

KENS 5 took a look inside the Alamo through an online virtual tour, because the historic building is now closed to visitors.

According to a San Antonio Police Department report, a tour guide caught Perez carving "Julio" into the limestone wall. Police said Perez ran when the tour guide asked him to stop, and the guide imidiately told Alamo security about the incident.

Alamo security caught up with Perez and reportedly held him until police officers arrived. SAPD said the carved word is about three inches long and one inch wide, but it caused about $250,000 in damage. Perez now faces second degree felony and criminal mischief charges.
