Man sentenced to 75 years in ETX aggravated robbery

A Dallas man will serve 75 years in prison after pleading guilty to an aggravated robbery in Gilmer earlier in 2017, according to a press release from the Upshur County Criminal District Attorney's office.

Gerald Michaul Hiam, Jr., of Dallas pleaded guilty to the crime before jury selection was to begin in Upshur County, and a separate jury handed down his punishment Tuesday afternoon.

Hiam entered the Texaco West store on Highway 154 in Gilmer on April 17 and demanded money from the clerk while brandishing a handgun. The clerk recognized Hiam from a photo line-up and testified Hiam had been in the store two days earlier when she offered him a hamburger at her local church for Easter.

The sentencing jury also heard evidence that Hiam was sentenced to seven years for a prior aggravated robbery and that he had five prior felony convictions along with multiple misdemeanor convictions.

Hiam testified in his own defense, admitting under cross examination he'd committed other crimes to which he'd not been caught.
