LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Charles Lawrence Johnson is back in the Gregg County Jail, after District Judge Alfonso Charles issued a bench warrant.
Johnson, 54, of the Morris County town of Omaha, is accused of impersonating a Texas Ranger and attacking two Longview cops in June 2011. Police records stated that Johnson was forbidden from entering Churchill Apartments property on East Whaley Street in Longview, but he was on the property June 10, 2011, and refused management's request to leave a residence. When police arrived, he said he was a Texas Ranger and "displayed a badge" that was actually a money clip, and when officers tried to subdue Johnson, he fought them, punching one officer in the face several times before he was subdued.
Nearly two months ago, Charles ruled that Johnson was incompetent to stand trial and ordered Johnson to in-patient mental health services. Neither prosecutor Chris Parker nor defense attorney Daryl Bennett opposed the order.
Charles' ruling followed a competency evaluation from Flint psychologist Thomas G. Allen, who believed Johnson suffers from paranoid delusions and is "mentally retarded."
"(Johnson) believes he was a Texas Ranger when arrested, but they took his badge away so he had to retire. He is perplexed by this, indicating he just wanted to keep criminals off the streets," Allen wrote. "He really likes Chuck Norris, who he says is a Texas Ranger. He says Chuck Norris is a good guy who once arrested his father... (Johnson) has not given up on becoming a Texas Ranger again in the future."
