March 31: Deadline to sign up for the Affordable Care Act

(KYTX) -- It's a deadline that will cost you if you miss it. March 31st is the last day you can sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

"I've heard you know everyone is going to need it, but I didn't know it was coming so soon," Chenne Mackey of Tyler said.

That's the feeling of a lot of Americans, with current enrollment well below the goal of 7 million people. And missing the deadline? You'll pay a fine of $95 per person this year. After this year, the penalty will increase.

"I kind of feel like people shouldn't have to pay fines for not being able to afford it. It's very expensive," Mackey said.

But there are qualified navigators to help people sign up. Lauren Parlow says an appointment usually runs 45 minutes--and a navigator will help you create an account and go over your different plans.

"I've seen them range anywhere from $25 to $500 and it really depends on your family's household income, the number of people in your household, and if you're eligible for a tax credit or not," Parlow said.

As time runs out she hopes even more people hear about this assistance, including that there are bilingual navigators for families who only speak Spanish.

You can contact her at the Andrews Center in Tyler at 903-597-1351.
