LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Angela Hamill is working overtime, trying to get all of these flowers ready for Valentine's Day. She has owned this flower shop for years, and says as a small business money is always tight.
"It trickles down. If my suppliers have to pay more then I have to pay more and my prices will rise."
She says it will affect small businesses much more than larger chains. In last night's state of the union address, the President promised an Executive Order that would raise federal contract employees' minimum wage to 10.10 an hour. A measure he does not need Congress to approve. He will support a bill in Congress doing the same for everyone else. Amber Darby works for 7.25 an hour in Longview and she says she needs the raise.
"Unless you get a lot of hours, you really don't have enough for food."
"For small business owners like the Hamills, they say that even though it's just a 3 dollar increase, that increase will affect everyone."
"It affects my bottom line. If I have to pay more I will have to cut back on some of my employees hours"
Minimum wage has been at 7.25 since 2009.
