(KYTX) -- Representatives from DPS giving insight into why a mother wasn't issued a citation for letting her two kids ride inside the trunk of a car.
A Dodge Charger was spotted leaving Lufkin city limits and DPS troopers, acting off a tip, stopped the vehicle and found two young kids inside the trunk. Even though they were OK, moms we talked with can't believe it happened.
"Our kids ask us to do crazy things all the time, but we don't actually do them. I can't imagine letting my kids run around in the back of a trunk," Tiffany Koop, a mother of three children in Tyler, said.
Koop says you can never be too careful in the car. Texas law states anyone under 8 years old be secured in a car seat, so she's surprised this woman was not issued a ticket. "When there's no consequence for your actions, sometimes you don't think about how serious it could be," Koop said.
Whether a citation is issued is up to the trooper according to Trooper Stephanie Davis, spokesperson for the DPS District office.
"Every circumstance, every stop is different. Maybe this decision by this particular parent was just a poor and bad decision on her part," Davis said.
Davis said the kids asked to be placed in the trunk, and so the mother allowed it.
