A lot of East Texans are getting dirty this 4th of July weekend to thank the people who gave us another year of freedom. The second annual "Muddin' for the Military" is being held at River Run ATV Park near Jacksonville.
Last year the event raised a total of $7,600 for Lone Star Warriors Outdoors. Before the gates opened this year they had already raised $10,000. Organizers are expecting nearly four times the number of people through the gates. Of course anybody who can come out and help is welcome. We want to show you a little bit of what goes on out here."
"If you're not muddin' you ain't havin' fun," Army and Air Force veteran Timothy Pennington said.
Pennington is a wounded warrior--back home after 22 of service.
"If I could have stayed in it longer, I would have stayed in it longer," he said.
Muddin' for the military is for people like him. All weekend the "mud money" going to Lone Star Warriors Outdoors will bring wounded warriors together.
"We all have the same experiences," Pennington said. "So we can talk about it. We feel comfortable. So that's therapeutic in a way."
"They've worked really hard to do what they do and this is a support group," Suzette Thedford said. "Those guys and women fight for our country, give us our rights to enjoy the freedom that we have."
At least for this weekend, freedom means it's ok to get stuck in the mud and take your time getting back out. Because when the bill for freedom rides in on the back of a 4-wheeler, people like Pennington write the check.
"Words can't describe the appreciation I have for everyone who comes out here," Pennington said.
