Nacogdoches County sheriff hangs up his hat

(KYTX) - Another East Texas sheriff is hanging up his hat today after 12 years leading Nacogdoches County law enforcement.

Sheriff Thomas Kerss started with the department in 1990.

He tells CBS-19 he's most proud of the way his office handled the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster of 2003.

But looking back there are some other things he's happy he avoided.

"I am very proud of the fact that in my twelve years as sheriff we do not have a single homicide on record," Kerss said. "And I'm also very thankful"

"I did not lose an officer or employee to a line of duty accident," Kerss added.

Kerss has more than three decades of law enforcement experience.

He started his career with the Tyler Police Department.

Jason Bridges replaces Kerss as Nacogdoches County sheriff.
