Newgate Mission launches campaign to help homeless

The number of homeless persons in Northeast Texas has more than doubled during the past eight years.

The Northeast Texas Homeless Consortium participated in last week's statewide point-in-time survey to get a census of the homeless in Texas. The group said there are about 650 homeless people in its six-county area. That's compared with fewer than 300 homeless people in 2005.

Newgate mission has launched a $200,000 campaign to add about 5,000 square feet at its mission on Mobberly avenue to meet the growing need.
