TYLER (KYTX) —They've named a football field after him. They recently named a new thoroughfare after him. This summer they named a new Division I college football award after him. What more awaits Earl Campbell this year is unknown.
But one thing in Campbell's future that officials with Super 1 Foods in Tyler, Texas, are excited about is his scheduled participation in a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Wednesday, November 7, at the company's new 58,000-square-foot store on East Gentry Parkway.
The National Football League Hall-of-Fame player and Heisman Trophy winner also markets Earl Campbell Meat Products; so, there will be plenty of sausage and hot links on the grill when Super 1 Foods kicks off its grand opening at the north Tyler store, as well as the company's two other recently remodeled locations in "America's Rose Capital."
"We're excited about our new Super 1 Foods store in Tyler, as well as the renovated stores on Troup Highway and West Erwin," said President and CEO Rick Rayford of Tyler-based Brookshire Grocery Co., parent company of the Super 1 Foods brand in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. "We've put a lot of planning, funds and work into these projects and look forward to officially unveiling the stores to shoppers. We're especially glad Earl can be here to help us celebrate, along with our employees and customers."
City and county officials, as well as community leaders from the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Business Alliance, and Tyler Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, will participate in the ribbon cutting set for 10:30 a.m. that Wednesday.
Local officials helped the 57-year-old Tyler native establish the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, to be presented annually to the country's outstanding Division I senior college offensive football player. The $16.4 million Earl Campbell Parkway connecting Texas Highway 155 to West Loop 323 opened August 30. Since 2006 the football field at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium has been known as Earl Campbell Field.
