Northeast braces for snow, frigid temperatures

(CBS) - The Northeast is getting pounded with its first major snow storm of the year.

As much as 18 inches of snow is expected to fall in some areas. The storm is already causing travel problems.  Several highways in New York state have been shut down.  And thousands of flights at some of the country's busiest airports have been cancelled.

Some schools in New England and New York closed well ahead of the snow, while cities mobilized plows and salt spreaders, and state offices sent workers home early. The bitter cold can be particularly dangerous for the homeless. Outreach teams in New York and Boston are walking the streets to find the homeless and get them into shelters.
