(KYX) - The month of October is National Dental Hygiene month. In support of their profession, local dental hygiene students from Tyler Junior College are reaching out to help educate the community about the importance of oral hygiene.
"In today's fast-paced world dental care is often over looked," said sophomore Celli Gallina.
Collectively, second-year dental hygiene students will log roughly 375 hours of community service by the end of the Fall semester.
Students provide oral health education to people of all ages at various schools and organizations and to staff members in nursing homes. Educational topics include cavity prevention, proper brushing and flossing techniques, tobacco cessation, the effect of oral diseases on overall health, along with many other important tidbits for keeping a healthy smile.
