TYLER (KYTX) - One man is shot outside his home in Tyler. The man who police believe pulled the trigger, is behind bars tonight.
That man who was arrested Tuesday afternoon is 20-year-old Bennie Jewel Williams III. Police say he shot 28-year-old Tyler man Chris Crockett in the arm in the 900 block of South Turner Street in Tyler at about 2:00.
The shooting put neighbors like Sonia Denmark, on edge.
"My son lives down here and my boyfriend lives here," Denmark said.
She panicked when she heard about a shooting on South Turner Street.
"Somebody said Chris got shot, and I'm thinking it was my son!" she said. The victim wasn't Denmark's son Chris, but another man, 27-year-old Chris Crockett.
Tyler police say Crockett was on his front porch two other men, when things went down hill.
Officer Don Martin with the Tyler Police Department said, "Another group had pulled up in a vehicle. They knew each other."
Martin says the men in the car asked to borrow a shovel, and then things got out of hand.
"They'd gotten out, they'd been here for like 10 minutes, then apparently someone from that group pulled out a gun and shot the other person that was out in the front yard to begin with," Martin says.
Crockett was rushed to the hospital. The bullet hit him in his left forearm.
While police continued to interview witnesses at the scene other police officers pulled over the car with the suspect in it. After questioning several people, police arrested one man in the car, Bennie Jewel Williams III.
Police found a .22 caliber handgun at the scene. They believe Williams used it to shoot Crockett.
Denmark is close friends with the people who live in Crockett's house. She says, "They've been friends a long time. The young lady that lives there, she's been a friend for a long time. Known her all her life."
She says even in a tight knit neighborhood, she'll keep an extra eye on her grandchildren when they're in the area.
Crockett has been treated and released from the hospital. Williams is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police are still investigating to find out why the conversation escalated to a shooting.
