Parents and students at Hogg Middle School thankful no one was hurt in small electrical fire

TYLER (KYTX)-Elaine Brown had just dropped her granddaughters off at school when she got a call to come back and pick them up.

"She was just saying that they were evacuating some children and they had a small fire and the fire was put out and there was still some smoke damage so she asked me if I wanted to pick the children up so I was like yes! If there is smoke damage we don't want the children to get smoke inhalation you know," Brown said.

A small electrical fire in the server room was quickly put out by firefighters but left the school without electricity .

"I thank god that nobody got hurt, that's the main thing that nobody got hurt. Everyone got out safe so I thank god for that," Brown said.

One Hogg student says the morning was very stressful.

"It was a ruckus because everyone was trying to call their parents and everyone was using my phone and people were using other peoples phones. A lot of people were trying to get out of the school," Student Maxi Garnica said.

Students were kept in the building while they waited to be picked up, something that made another Hogg student nervous.

"A little because we were still in the building but then the fireman came and said the fire was out so I felt safer now," Student Yarixa Villela said.

Brown says she was glad to be able to be there for her granddaughters while their mother was at work.

"I was glad to pick them up, I'm always there when they need me," Brown said,

According to Tyler ISD, all after school activities are canceled for today but the school will be open tomorrow.
