Pearland school bus driver charged with sexual assault of a child

PEARLAND (KHOU) – A bus driver for the Pearland Independent School District was charged with sexual assault of a child after she was found with a student at the district bus barn, officials said early Wednesday.

According to the Pearland Police Department, 47-year-old Diana Leigh Almanza was arrested at her home and booked into jail on a $60,000 bond.

A press release from the school district said the victim and the victim's family lived with Almanza at her Pearland home, and the child would ride with her to the bus barn.

Another employee noticed suspicious activity between the two last Thursday morning and notified Pearland ISD administrators. An investigation was immediately launched.

The district said the investigation "revealed inappropriate interaction between the employee and the student."

Pearland ISD immediately terminated the Almanza—prior to her Thursday afternoon bus route—for violations of district policy: unauthorized use of a bus, as well as misconduct with a student, officials said.

Because of laws protecting student privacy rights and pertaining to a criminal charge, Pearland ISD is limited in the information that can be disclosed.
