People in Tyler looking forward to smoother streets

TYLER (KYTX) - Get ready for some construction on South Broadway in Tyler, starting this Sunday.

The City of Tyler is repaving the asphalt from Erwin Street to 4th Street. Crews will be working between 7 p.m. And 6 a.m.- weather permitting. The project is expected to be finished by early August.

Bill Barton gets picked up by Tyler Transit at the bus stop on South Broadway and Houston Street. He says his ride has only gotten bumpier over the years.

"It's pretty poor. They need to do some repairs on it."

He's in luck. The City of Tyler is removing the current asphalt surface and replacing it with new asphalt.

"It'll help because, you know, standing here, like waiting on the bus, people come by and you know. You hear the rattling vehicles. And, it's rough on vehicles."

Barton says he'd like to see Tyler keep growing, but that won't happen if the roads are falling apart.

"See the cracks and all that. I mean it's not good. And, it doesn't look good. And, you know, Tyler is getting to be a popular city. And, people coming in, thinking about moving and see the rough streets, you know, may say, 'heck, maybe i better go elsewhere.'"

Gene Ruelle wants all the business he can get. He owns Ruelle's Restorations on South Broadway.

"We've seen a lot of construction throughout the years and improvements. And, i feel that this is a great thing for the City of Tyler. It's great for the business. I know there's going to be an inconvenience and a sacrifice. But, that's just with growing pains."

After 32 years in business, Ruelle says he's learned that customers will find another way to get to him if that's what they have to do.

"And, the roads really do need it." he says. "So, I'm all in favor of it."

The project is expected to be complete August 5th.
