Plane hits trees, crashes near airport

UPDATE: RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - A small plane crashed near the Gregg County Regional Airport Thursday night.

Sgt. David Roberts, with the Rusk County Sheriff's Office, said the crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. on County Road 2156D and Farm-to-Market Road 2011, near the county line.

The crash site was near the Elderville-Lakeport Volunteer Fire Department, which arrived within minutes.

Roberts said a pilot was circling the airport waiting for clearance to land when his plane caught the top of pine trees and crashed.

No buildings were damaged, and Roberts said the pilot was talking to deputies after the crash. He could not confirm the man's name or whether he was sent to a hospital for treatment.

As of press time, the Federal Aviation Agency was en route from Denton to investigate the scene, Roberts said.

We're told a single engine plane was circling to land when it crashed around 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening.  The sheriff's office says the plane clipped the top of the trees and crash landed in an open field.  Sheriff Jeff Price says the pilot made it out of the plane safely and has not been taken to the hospital.  We have a crew on the way to the scene and we'll have more information as it becomes available.

FAA representatives out of Denton are on the way to the scene to investigate.
