Poet Seamus Heaney dead

London (CNN) -- Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet Seamus Heaney died Friday, his publisher said.

Heaney died in Dublin, Ireland, after a short illness, publisher Faber & Faber announced on behalf of his family.

The 1995 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature was widely considered one of the greatest poets of his generation.

The Nobel award cited his "works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past."
