Police believe teen was murdered to prevent testimony in sex assault case

IRVING (CW33.com) - Family and friends of 16 year old Shania Gray say she was an outgoing student who loved academics and athletics.

"She's just and amazing talented young woman. When she walked into a room she had this sort of glow to her. She made everyone smile and she was such an amazing person", said family friend Jonathan Simon.

They showed us dozens of medals she won for the many sports she participated in including track, basketball and soccer.

She was also a talented singer.

"Everyone just loved her for her voice. She was known to have a very angelic voice", said family friend Nina Adams.

They never expected her young life to end so suddenly.

"Shania definitely did not deserve this", Adams said.

Shania went missing Thursday at the end of the school day at Hebron High School in Carrollton.

Her body was found Saturday evening in Irving. She had been shot and dumped in the Trinity River.

Police arrested Franklin Davis, 30, for the murder.

Police say Davis was facing criminal charges in a prior case involving Shania.

Her family tells us Davis sexually assaulted her two years ago while she was babysitting his children. He was to go on trial next month. They suspect he killed Shania to keep her from testifying against him.

The family says Davis posed as a 16 year old on Facebook and lured Shania into a trap.

"He changed his image; he got rid of his car. He made himself appear younger and he showed up at her school and called her name and as she was walking toward the car, he pulled a gun out on her", Adams said.

Despite her death, her family is trying to remember her for the full life she lived in only 16 years.

"I just want to tell her that I love her and that I miss her a lot. And I just wish she was here", Simon said.

Shania was from Mesquite but her family was in the process of moving to Carrollton. A vigil for her will be held Monday night at 7pm at Horn High School in Mesquite.
