HOUSTON (KHOU) – A female student was found dead Monday morning at the new University of Houston football stadium, officials said.
According to the UH Police, she was dead by the time construction workers arrived Monday morning.
They are back to work now, but construction stopped for a number of hours beneath that new scoreboard. That's where workers found the student's body.
Her identity has not been released yet, but UH Police think she fell from the top of the stadium. How she got there and why is part of their investigation, but they see no signs of foul play.
Workers here would not talk on camera. Police urged them to steer all questions toward the university.
Most students had no idea something was wrong until KHOU 11 News explained what happened. However, none seemed surprised that a student got past construction gates, fence and security after hours.
"I know they have security patrolling on the carts and stuff. As far as just around the construction, I don't know that I see too many," Lauren Hogan, a junior at UH, said.
"Just a couple a guys walking around… talking on the phone – but yeah, that should have been monitored. That shouldn't have allowed to happen with our security," Jose Garcia, another UH student, said.
"It's just an awful thing to happen. I mean I don't know why. But the loss of life is always tough," Travis Brownlee, a UH student, said.
KHOU 11 News asked about possible security changes at the construction site, but officials said those details are part of the investigation.
