Police warn of scam involving Walmart, CVS gift cards

Released by the Kilgore Police Department

KILGORE/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - The Kilgore Police Department has been made aware of an active scam occurring in the local area.

Phone calls are being made to local residences from a private number or 1-876-897-2570 in which a person with a heavy foreign accent tells you you've won a large amount of money.

The call taker is told to purchase a gift card from Wal-Mart or CVS Pharmacy and have your ID available for the prize team to deliver the check. They then advise they will come to your home and personally deliver the prize money. They give you a specified time in which the check will be delivered and they will pick up your gift card. They call back at a later time and request to know where you obtained the card and what color it is. Additionally, they want the numbers on the gift card.

Of you course you have not won anything and all the scam artist wants is the numbers on the card, so they can replicate it and use it.

Please be aware of this scam and make others aware also.
