Powerball mania as jackpot nears $600 million

TYLER (KYTX) - Who wouldn't want to take a chance to win $600 million, or even a fraction of that?

The Powerball jackpot is expected to hit that number before the drawing Saturday night.

And it's drawing attention from people across the country.

It's safe to say some people are truly getting behind the idea of winning big.

In fact, at one store where we stopped, the clerk says a man bought $200 worth of tickets.

But, what are the odds you'll win?

"Infrequent player," says Lena Bowen.

Bowen says she isn't a gambler, but when she saw what was at stake for the Powerball jackpot this week, she couldn't pass up the opportunity on her way home from work.

"I decided to take a chance and see what happens," says Bowen.

And the players lining up are all skill levels.

"I just started last week, I don't even know how to play," says Saduman Ozturk.

"Usually come get a quick pick and be done with it," says Andre Taylor.

Some people say there's a real method to choosing your numbers, whether it be kids birthdays, or an anniversary. It even comes with instructions, it says to choose 5 numbers 1 through 59, and another number.

But what would you even do with that much money?

"Lots of stuff, travel, give to my friends, my family I guess, quit working," says Ozturk.

"I would invest it, first get me a house," says Taylor.

"Retire," says Bowen.

I guess it would give you enough cushion for that!

But with 43 states taking part in the drawing, chances could be slim.

"One in a trillion," says Bowen.

"Not much, but it's fun and exciting to play it," says Taylor.

And while these East Texans have big dreams, and plans, they're just enjoying the fun of Powerball mania while the money looks good on paper.

"If you don't play, you won't win," says Taylor.

The odds of you winning the grand prize is 1 in 175,000,000 people.

Even to take home a cool million dollars, you're looking at being 1 in more than 5 million people.

Powerball tickets are 2 dollars each, it's an extra dollar for the Powerplay option, which multiplies your winnings.

The Powerball drawing will be Saturday night at 9:59.
