TYLER (KYTX) - There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, even when you're exercising.
If you've ever worked out really hard and felt like you had the flu a day or two later, you might have a mild case of Rhabdomyolysis.
"Kind of what it felt like was the flu. Then when I got to the doctor's office, started to get real bad. When I couldn't remember my name," says Brian Boyd.
Boyd had a case of Rhabdomyolysis about a year ago.
He spent 5 days in the hospital.
"My thighs were really swollen, chest, core very swollen," says Boyd.
Boyd's fine now, but the firefighter learned a lesson about over-doing it.
"Did CrossFit that morning, went to the station and worked out, got up the next morning and went to CrossFit, then went to work cleaning pools," says Boyd.
"The problem arises when you're doing excessive workouts without backing off," says Dr. Kathy Fieseler with Trinity Mother Frances.
It's from overuse, over training and over stimulating, usually a specific muscle group. So say you do 2 hours of pull ups, that could lead to severe tissue breakdown.
"Muscle breaks down, releases some of chemicals into the blood stream and kidney has to filter through and out. The chemicals released are large enough that it can clog the kidneys," says Dr. Fieseler.
Dr. Fieseler says mild cases can be seen in many athletes, including high school football players taking hits in two-a-days, weight training and more.
"Eccentric is what weightlifters call negatives. The muscle is getting longer, so it's the downward motion of a bicep curl, or running downhill or squats," says Dr. Fieseler.
She says the breakdown can lead to kidney failure in extreme cases, but many people don't know they have a mild case.
So when working out, Boyd learned you shouldn't overdo it, stay hydrated and listen to your body.
"Your body will tell you a lot if you listen to it," says Boyd.
Other symptoms are being unusually sore, aching, loss of strength, confusion, vomiting and very dark colored urine.
