Pump Jacks Provide an Economic Boost for Kilgore, and ETX

KILGORE (KYTX) - Gregry Sykes is only 6 years old, and is experiencing his first, live baseball game. He says he loves seeing these potential future pros in his own backyard of Kilgore.

"I love baseball!" - Gregry Sykes

The city of Kilgore hosts the East Texas Pump Jacks, and Kilgore Chamber of Commerce President Cindy Morris says they're a major asset bringing in about 600 fans a night. Visiting teams and fans fill up local hotels and eat at restaurants.

"It's not only about the visitor, it's about our own staying in Kilgore to spend that dollar." - Cindy Morris, President of the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce

Pump Jacks fans come from all over East Texas to support the team. The players also contribute. These guys spend their summers with local host families. These families can spend an extra $1,000 a month feeding, and caring for these aspiring pros.  Young fans like Sykes says plan on seeing him behind the plate someday.

"My favorite part is when they pitch, and they whack that ball" - Sykes
