Ratings hold hospitals accountable for patient safety and quality care

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- You go to the hospital to get better, but sometimes the opposite happens. About 180,000 patients die every year in hospitals as the result of sub-standard care.

To make hospitals more accountable, Consumer Reports is tracking the safety and quality of hospitals nationwide.

2013 data shows the average hospital scores a 49 on a 100-point scale when it comes to safety.

Trinity Mother Frances is happy to say, its track record speaks for itself. "We've gotten the America 100 best hospitals HealthGrades Award for the 5th year in a row. Leapfrog just awarded us an "A" rating on our quality and safety," Dr. Barbara Allen, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Trinity Mother Frances, said.

Healthgrades and Leapfrog are both organizations that track hospital safety and quality. Trinity Mother Frances has a quality counsel that meets to ensure they are striving for the best care possible.

"We pride ourselves on making sure we're reporting these measures publicly, because we want our patients to know," Allen said.

Allen says there is a broad range of care at any hospital, and certain areas need to be closely monitored.

"How do we prevent blood clots? Do we provide perfect care around certain diagnoses like heart failure, and pneumonia care,?" Allen said.

She says while you only have a limited choice when you're sick of where to go locally, it never hurts to do your homework ahead of time.

"The more transparent we are with our data and our results, the better for the patient"

ETMC also released a statement about safety in its hospital. It reads in part:

"It's important for consumers to recognize that healthcare is an incredibly complex process. Scoring is also subject to a great deal of interpretation. All hospitals, ETMC included, are using new systems of safety and quality monitoring to help identify areas of improvement," Ralph Carroll, Quality Improvement Officer at ETMC.

Consumer Reports took into account more than 2,000 hospitals in the U.S. The highest scoring is Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay, WI with a score of 74.
