Remembering our seniors this holiday season

Adopt a Grandparent

TYLER (KYTX) - An important reminder to not forget about seniors and the elderly this holiday season. You can make a senior feel special by participating in the "Adopt-a-Grandparent Christmas Community Service Project."

You can adopt a grandparent with just $10.That gets them a special pampering gift in a holiday bag that's decorated by local elementary school students. Organizers say it's a small way to show you care and enjoy the reason for the season.

"Hand cream, lotion, a body care item..."

Maranda Rains with the Adopt-a-Grandparent project says the more donations received, the more seniors who will get these pampering gift bags decorated by elementary students at Chapel Hill ISD.

"This bag, for example, just says 'Merry Christmas,' 'time to give,' 'God bless you," and each child will have their own unique way to decorate the bag."

First graders at Wise Elementary school are just some of the students who will be decorating them.

Teacher Nicole Parker says it's all part of a six week project called "Serving our Seniors."

"The students had to come up with a driving question. And, they came up with, 'how can we, as first graders, serve senior citizens?'"

One idea they brainstormed is to invite seniors to their Christmas Play.

"The 'Reindeer Rebellion'- you get to invite senior citizens and anyone else that you want to invite." says first grade student Omar Torrescano.

Adysen Trout says she's learning a lot from this project.

"In the play, I'm the one who says, 'On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree.' And, I know a senior citizen means like, old people that are like 65 or older."

And students say they want seniors and their grandparents to feel special this holiday season.

"Cause I love them and they take care of me some- too." says Torrescano.

"I just think that's the biggest thing we could do right now is teach our younger children to respect and show love and honor those who paved the path before us." says Rains.

Because years from now, the first graders will be grandparents wanting the same kind of holiday love.

Students will finish decorating the gift bags next week and then they'll be delivered to local senior care facilities December 21.

Donating $500 or more sponsors an entire senior care facility. It's up to you how generous you'd like to be!

Everyone is also invited the Wise Elementary Christmas play. It's Tuesday at 9 a.m. In the school cafeteria.

You only have one day left to adopt a grandparent. Donations for gifts are due tomorrow!
