(KYTX) - Renovations to the Smith County jail in downtown Tyler are moving along.
Jail safety inspectors did a walk-through now that some parts are up and running.
In this year's proposed budget, Smith County commissioners say a few new positions are added in the kitchen and laundry areas.
Right now, some inmates are still being housed outside the county while the downtown expansion is under construction.
"We're still continuing to do that until the jail is completed so I think they are really really pleased that we've made the decision to finally get something underway"
It's cost taxpayers nearly $20 million over the years to house inmates outside of Smith County.
We're told the downtown renovations are on track to be finished around January.
