Report: Cowboys releasing DeMarcus Ware

IRVING (CBS SPORTS) - The Cowboys are going to release their all-time sack leader DeMarcus Ware, according to multiple reports.

It's a stunning -- and still not-so-stunning -- turn of events as NFL free agency prepares to open at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Ware reportedly refused to take a pay cut from the Cowboys, leaving them little choice but to release him.

The Cowboys, who had an absolutely awful defense in 2013, will now lose their best player heading into 2014.

They will pick up $7.4 million in cap space as a result of the move but also now stare down more than $8 million in dead money as a result.

Ware's definitely older and slowing down a little bit, but he's going to find work quickly. He can land with a contender who will give him playing time in either a 4-3 or 3-4 defense. And he'll sack the quarterback.

The Cowboys better hope he doesn't land in the NFC East.
