Report: East Texas pastor faces federal conspiracy, theft charges

PORTLAND, MAINE (KYTX) - A Cushing pastor associated with a church based in Longview appeared in federal court Wednesday on charges of conspiracy to commit Social Security fraud and theft of government benefits.

According to the Maine Sun-Journal, 68-year-old Carroll Freemont Pennell is accused of conspiring with members of the church he ministered - Word of God Fellowship Church in Brunswick, Maine - to have his wife paid for work he performed so he could collect nearly $150,000 in disability benefits.

Pennell was pastor of the church, affiliated with Longview-based International Word of God Fellowship, from 1994 until 2011 when he resigned and moved to Texas.

He faces up to 10 years in prison. For more on the story, click here.
