Residents can return home after fire in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - The Smith County Sheriff's Office says it is safe for homeowners to return to their homes near Jackson Heights where they were evacuated earlier today.

Nearly 60 homes were evacuated off of FM 2767 when a large grass fire pulled in nearly every fire department in Smith County. The fire was about 350 acres in size.

The Sheriff's Office says two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, multiple buildings and vehicles were lost in the fire.

The road is open to homeowners, but not to regular traffic.

Firefighters will remain on the scene tonight to be sure there are no flare ups, and the Sheriff's Office asks that homeowners be vigilant in watching the areas around them as well.
