Safety tips for the cold weather conditions on the way

(KYTX) - With the season's first freezing temperatures in the forecast, firefighters want you to prepare your family's home for the winter.

They say it's a good idea to have your furnace and chimney inspected by a professional, once a year.
Also make sure your space heater is at least 3 feet from anything that could catch fire.

"Space heaters don't have to be touching something to catch it on fire. If it's close enough and it heats up enough it can catch the bedding on the bed on fire, or sofas on fire," says Brandon Davis, Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal.

Other safety precautions to keep in mind, never leave candles unattended and make sure your family has  practiced a fire escape plan.
