School district works to fill superintendent job

Tyler (KYTX) -- A school district is working to fill it's top leadership position. Applications for the open Tyler ISD

superintendent job are coming in before the deadline at the end of this month. CBS19's Jaime Gerik updates us on how the search is going and what's expected of the newcomer.

"I'd love to say we're looking for another Gary Mooring," Orenthia Mason, President of the TISD Board of Trustees, said.

Current Superintendent Gary Mooring announced in early April he'd be stepping down to retire. Mason says his replacement needs to also be a strong communicator.

"The superintendent should have wonderful people skills. Mr. Mooring was just outstanding of coming in and setting a beautiful tone, a great tone where staff felt supported," Mason said.

Wanting less turnover, Mason says longevity is important.

"We're hoping this superintendent will want to make his or her home in the Tyler area," Mason said.

So far Mason says she knows of 6 or 7 applications submitted to the school district's attorney. The deadline isn't until May 30th.

"Many applicants I'm assuming are in positions where May is a busy time for them, so we expect we'll get more applications as the deadline approaches," Dawn Parnell, Communications Director for TISD, said.

Once all applications are reviewed, board members will select their top choices and start the interview process. There's a chance if no one fits the bill, the search could be extended. In that case, Mooring would stay on until the new superintendent takes over.
Right now principals and teachers are being asked to give feedback in what characteristics they'd like to see in their new boss.

Mason says they want to ensure the best leader possible.
