LEVERETT'S CHAPEL/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - There are about a dozen schools here in East Texas who were identified Monday by the attorney general's office for not having reported their school safety audits.
But the superintendents we spoke to at at least three of those districts say they do have a crisis management system in place, and they're working to improve their policies.
On Monday, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott identified 78 school districts that had not reported their safety plans and updates to the Texas School Safety Center in Austin.
Maureen Laramore has a six-year-old at Leverett's Chapel, one of about a dozen East Texas school districts identified by the attorney general.
"It does got me concerned sometimes after what happened in Newtown, but I think Leverett's Chapel is pretty safe for my kid," Laramore said.
State law requires school districts and community colleges to train employees and students on how to respond to emergencies.
Administrators at Leverett's Chapel, Union Hill and Laneville schools say they've done that.
They also say they lock their doors during school hours and have one access point -- and visitors sign in and out.
"Even though that was mentioned on the news, our superintendent neglected to submit that in, but we do have a security plan in place," LCISD Elementary and Junior High Principal Josh Johnson said.
The superintendents we talked to both here at Leverett's Chapel and at other districts say they've been on the phone this morning with members of the attorney general's office trying to get this squared away. Each of them say they have a safety audit in place. It's just a matter of the reporting.
"We are confident as a school district that, with a plan in place, that we can handle anything that may arise," Johnson said.
The superintendent at Leverett's Chapel said Monday's announcement from the AG's office makes her school district vulnerable.
A spokesman for the AG's office said the real vulnerability comes when schools are not prepared for crises... And that not reporting safety audits is not an option.
